Waking up early comes naturally to some people, and it is a struggle for you if you’re anything like me. There has been a TON of research about waking up early and the benefits of doing that. I can wholeheartedly admit that I have ALWAYS struggled with waking up early and sticking with it. And guess what? That’s okay. I’m ready to try again, and I’m not looking at this as success or failure. I’m looking at this similar to an experiment. I see this as an opportunity to learn more about myself, and I encourage you to view it the same way. At the same time, people tend to put a lot of pressure on themselves or have high expectations. All you can do is best with what you’ve got. You know that saying, “The early bird gets the worm?” Well, that actually might be true. When I started researching this blog post and for my Rise & Shine Challenge, I got inspired to finally try waking up at the same time of day for 5 whole days straight. If you haven’t done the challenge yet, it’s free, and you can start it anytime. This challenge is simple. It involves you waking up early (before 7 am) every day. That’s it! If you’re already a morning person and don’t need encouragement waking up (sweet)! Or Perhaps you want an accountability buddy? Well, I’m here for you too.
Did you know monks usually get up early, approximately (1-3 hours)? So while the rest of the world sleeps, monks have been up for hours. The reason they do this is to meditate. I’m not a monk, and I bet you aren’t. There is one thing that I think we can learn from their practice of waking up early. When you are up and have that time for yourself, you can utilize that time to accomplish whatever will make you *feeeeeel* great throughout the day. If it’s meditation, great. How about reading a book while drinking a cup of coffee? How about walking the dog while listening to a podcast or audiobook? You are exercising WITHOUT the kids up under you, catching up with your partner, or doing some light stretching. Whatever your reason is, identify your WHY. Your why or, in other words, your #1 reason will help you get out of bed every day. Research suggests that waking up early can boost mood, improve life satisfaction, and minimize mental health problems. Talk about WOW!
EATING HEALTHIER
Did you know that people tend to eat healthier when they wake up earlier? Why is that? They may have the time to plan out their meals for the day. They may decide to pack a lunch or get something out to prep for dinner.
I recommend that you remain flexible whether you are participating in the challenge. Give yourself grace and know that this isn’t a failure. This is an opportunity to get what you need first thing in the morning. Showing up for yourself will enable you to show up as the best version of yourself.
FEEL HAPPIER
Once you start waking up early consistently, something internally happens. You begin to have more confidence. When you stick to something that you said you were going to do. You are committing to yourself. You will have the longest relationship with Y.O.U. Give yourself that opportunity to do what you need to do.
BETTER SLEEP
If you start with sleep, then you’ll have a better morning. Typically, if you wake up early, you may experience afternoon slumps or be tired early evening. Know feeling this way is normal and natural. By consistently going to bed at or around the same time each night and waking up at the same time each day your body will begin to adjust accordingly. You’ll sleep even better if you exercise in the morning as well. I know, I know. I may be getting ahead of myself here, but I want you to be prepared and get the most out of waking up early.
Again, I encourage you to think of your WHY. Ask yourself. Why do I want to wake up early? Why is this goal important to me? How will I reward myself for completing this goal? What could I do with my time in the morning?
